Possible-translations semantics for some weak classically-based paraconsistent logics

چکیده

This note provides interpretation through possible-translations semantics for a couple of fundamental paraconsistent logics extending the positive fragment of classical propositional logic. The logics PI, Cmin, CLuN, bC, Ci, among others, are all initially presented through their bivaluation semantics and sequent versions and then split by way of possible-translations semantics —the set of 3-valued matrices of the ingredient logics is put forward, together with the set of admissible translating mappings, in each case. Precise statements and all non-obvious details of proofs are supplied. Other details are left to the reader.

Limits for Paraconsistent Calculi

This paper discusses how to define logics as deductive limits of sequences of other logics. The case of da Costa’s hierarchy of increasingly weaker paraconsistent calculi, known as Cn, 1≤ n≤ ω, is carefully studied. The calculus Cω, in particular, constitutes no more than a lower deductive bound to this hierarchy, and differs considerably from its companions. A long standing problem in the lite...

Possible-translations Algebraizability

The interest of investigating combinations of logics has a philosophical side, a purely logic-theoretical side and promising applicational interests. This paper concentrates on the logic-theoretical side and studies some general methods for combination and decomposition, taking into account that the general idea of combining logics requires methods not only for building new logics, but also for...

A Categorial Approach to the Combination of Logics1

In this paper we propose a very general deenition of combination of logics by means of the concept of sheaves of logics. We rst discuss some properties of this general deenition and list some problems, as well as connections to related work. As applications of our abstract setting, we show that the notion of possible-translations semantics, introduced in previous papers by the rst author, can b...

Splitting Logics

This paper addresses the question of factoring a logic into families of (generally simpler) components, estimating the top– down perspective, splitting, versus the bottom–up, splicing. Three methods are carefully analyzed and compared: possible–translations semantics, nondeterministic semantics and plain fibring (joint with its particularization, direct union of matrices). The possibilities of ...

How to build your own paraconsistent logic: an introduction to the Logics of Formal (In)Consistency

The logics of formal inconsistency (LFIs) are logics that allow to explicitly formalize the concepts of consistency and inconsistency by means of formulas of their language. Contradictoriness, on the other hand, can always be expressed in any logic, provided its la nguage includes a symbol for negation. Besides being able to represent the distinction between contradiction and inconsistency, LFI...
